About Ashley Zapata, MA, LVN, CDP
Author | Educator | Doctoral Student in Clinical Psychology
Hi, I'm Ashley!
I created My Brain Explained because I believe knowledge is powerful. When we better understand what is happening in the brain and why, we can feel more prepared to advocate for ourselves, support someone we love, or provide more informed and compassionate care to others.
As a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN), Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP), author, neurodivergent educator, and advocate, helping others has always been at the heart of my work. I hold a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology and am currently pursuing my Doctorate in Clinical Psychology (PsyD), where my education, research, and clinical training continue to deepen my understanding of neurodiversity, cognition, mental health, and the aging brain.
Over the years, my education and clinical experiences—along with my own lived experience as a neurodivergent individual—have strengthened my passion for understanding the human brain. I've also seen how overwhelming it can be to navigate diagnoses and complex information, whether you're trying to understand yourself, care for a loved one, or better support the people you work with.
That is a big part of why My Brain Explained exists.
I'm here to take complicated information and make it feel a little easier to understand. Through my books, educational resources, and information sheets, I explore topics such as autism, ADHD, executive functioning, dementia, mindfulness and more. I connect what we know about the brain to what these experiences can actually look and feel like in everyday life.
My goal isn't simply to give you more information. I want that information to be useful. I want you to walk away feeling more prepared to ask questions, advocate for yourself, understand someone you love, approach caregiving with greater compassion, or bring new understanding into the work you do with others.
I truly believe that knowledge can reduce fear, understanding can build compassion, and education can empower us to thrive.
I'm so glad you're here, and I hope My Brain Explained can be a helpful resource as you learn more about the incredible complexity of the human brain.
